What is a Bengal Cat?  Bengal cats are the result of crossing Asian Leopard Cats (ALC) and domestic cats, usually Egyptian Mau or Domestic Shorthair, and subsequent generations of their offspring (This is crossing is not done anymore, as the Bengal is bred to Bengal to maintain the Bengal qualities rather than the qualities of other breeds).  Bengal cats have an athletic build (complementing their athletic and fun loving nature) and a strikingly spotted, rosetted, or marbled pattern. The most popular color combination is black or very dark brown pattern on a rich, warm brown, rufous or sandy-beige background. The Bengal breed standard emphasizes resemblance in body type to the leopard cat, while allowing exotic color combinations such as beige, light-brown, sorrel, black spotted or marbled patterns on tan, brown, silver, or cream backgrounds.  Bengal cat fur is often luxuriously soft or pelted (we have been told that allergy sufferers have no adverse reaction at all to their Bengals), and frequently is glittered! The Bengals you see at shows, and those offered for sale on this website are no less than 4 generations removed from the Asian Leopard cat (Hybrids or Foundation cats are not allowed to be shown).
